A good value bar ideal for starting a night out in Glebe
Bedlam represents some fairly serious competition for the Different Drummer down the road – it’s much bigger, the drinks are better (they make a pretty decent whisky sour for a tenner) and a they’ve employed a nicer team of bar staff who don’t growl at you every time you order a drink. (Although what’s with asking for the cash before the drink turns up?) It’s pretty much a super-classy uni bar, with outdoor seating for all you filthy smokers. It’s not exactly a site that’s done well over the years, the old University Hall – that big curved building on the corner of Glebe Point Road and Parramatta Road. But here’s a bar with some staying power. Why? Because of a little thing we like to call Happy Hours from 5–7pm every day. Schooners and glasses of wine at five bucks a pop and ten-dollar cocktails? Not bad, Bedlam. The interior’s cute – swirly, 60s-look wallpaper, upbeat house-funk toons, and retro furnishings. Take a seat at the bar on one of the upcycled tractor seat/bar stools or head downstairs and flop about on one of the lounges. Our advice? If you live or work around Glebe, go for Happy Hour, make your way to Toku Toku for some bar snacks and then head on up to the pointy end of Glebe Point Road to Timbah for a nightcap.
