One of Sydney’s best beer gardens exists right here in Newtown

First published on . Updated on .

The Courty is the epicentre of the Newtown boozing scene. It is where the whole melting pot of the inner west can be found in one enormous beer garden, downing jugs of beer and burgers and only pausing for a quick visit to the pinball room. That’s right, there’s a whole room dedicated to the sweet, vintage art of pinball. If you are going to indulge in some afternoon bevvies then this is the best place for it. Space is a premium at this perennially busy pub and you’ll definitely want to get in early to have a whisper of a chance of locking down one of the picnic tables in the beer garden. And you are almost guaranteed to run into someone you know here, such is the appeal of this sprawling corner pub. Stone and Wood Pacific ale, Fat Yak, Little Creatures bright ale, and White Rabbit are on tap along with your mega brewery varieties and they do a roaring trade in jugs of Bulmers, especially on Wednesdays nights when they are on special until 8pm. They have a solid bistro that does the well-loved Courty burger, a decent parma, and plates of scalding hot nachos that’ll kill the beer munchies dead in their tracks. Head here for giant connect four on Thursdays, bet on crab racing on Wednesdays, and on indulge your inner Nana with bingo on Fridays. Failing that just queue up some tracks in the jukebox and let the good times roll.
