The Courty is a truly great pub. A sprawling old corner hotel, it is beloved by old rockers, uni kids and everyone in between, with nooks and crannies to suit any mood. The front bar is decked out with posters of 70s AFL players and big screens for watching the game and is also the spot for a bit of Wednesday night crab racing. Jugs are definitely the way to go at this local haunt, be they cider or beer. Once you are at the Courty it is very hard to leave and so you may as well accept your fate and stock up accordingly. If you are having a really terrible morning, or if the hair of the dog is the only cure, then head to the comically early happy hour, $3 local schooners 10–11am every day – but maybe don’t tell your mum. For something a bit different you can hole up in the pinball room where the air is thick with flashing lights and bizarre electronic bleeps, but the prime real estate is a table in the massive beer garden. Get in early to bags a table and never move from that spot – and why would you want to? You can get your hands on some pretty tasty pub food for under 20 bucks. The chicken parmagiana is a good bet and the burgers are hefty and delicious – exactly what you need after a boozy afternoon.
