Earl's Juke Joint

First published on . Updated on .

Pasan Wijesena, Shady Pines alumnus, is opening his own bar in Newtown, on the old Betta Meats site. Expect Nawlins classic cocktails and a soda fountain. Sounds like all kinds of fun to us. “The bar is inspired by the darker side of New Orleans and in particular the mix of French and African cultures,” he tells Time Out. “Think gris gris, voodoo queens, post-World War II rhythm’n’blues’n’rock’n’roll. And yes, probably strings of cheap plastic beads. The name is a tribute to Earl Palmer – a famous drummer from New Orleans. He is widely credited with creating the ‘backbeat’, which became the foundation of most rock‘n’roll music. I figured, ‘He probably liked to drink, so I'll name the bar after him’.” Earl’s is due to open in April so stay tuned.
