The latest Newtown watering hole is no small bar.
For anyone holding fast to the idea that their beloved Freaky Tiki would be resurrected within the newly refurbished Newtown Hotel, we have sad news for you. Festoon lighting does not a tiki bar make. Sure, there is some bamboo around the courtyard bar, a few neon lights and some colourful picnic tables, but the heart and soul of our grungy, fallen friend has not risen from the dead. RIP Freaky Tiki.
In its place stands a schmick and sizable establishment with a tiki-tinged courtyard, a public bar complete with leopard-print pool table, Greek restaurant the Animal upstairs and a very inviting balcony from which to view all the action of King Street.
The beers on tap are run-of-the-mill here, but those in the know will head to the upstairs bar where you can find a pretty interesting selection of imported craft beers in the bottle. Fair warning, you can spend as much on a beer as cocktail, but if good beer is your thing then we say it’s worth giving the Hitachino Nest red rice ale a whirl. This slightly sweet, weighty beer is like a square meal in a stubby, and is also gluten free.
Equally pricey but nevertheless delicious is the half-litre Harviestoun Schiehallion from Scotland. You’ll have more luck pronouncing it if you pretend you’re William Wallace. If you love a boutique beer but are watching your wallet, the North Coast Brewing Co Red Seal Ale comes in just under a tenner and the coppery pale ale is just the ticket for a balmy evening.

Great fit out, and love the wines on tap. So quirky! Great to have so a good spot for summer. Not so sure about some of the staff though...Only downside is that staff don't know their stuff, and are therefore slow and managers are to cool for school. Pity.
