Take your chihuahua swinging to the place in Bondi where the staff remember your name
It could just as easily be called “café that serves wine”, but that, too, would fail to do this little establishment justice. Thanks to its location and diminutive accommodations, the Shop and Wine Bar has stayed under the radar to a very satisfying degree for the band of locals who’ve struck up an almost familial attachment to the place. Whether you’re catching some sun on an outside table or ducking the rain in the cosy interior, the Shop is the perfect spot to while away an afternoon, sampling from a well-selected, mostly Australian wine list and dipping into the menu for a late lunch or early dinner. Staff are knowledgeable and happy to make recommendations – you won’t get the old ‘it depends what you feel like’ cop-out here – so feel free to ask their guidance when working your way through the dozen-or-so wines on offer by the glass. If you’re feeling thrifty (or enigmatic) go for the mystery glass during an extended happy hour (3-7pm) for just $6. A bottle of Castello lager goes for the same price if your thirst is more urgent. If you’re eating we suggest you pair an industrious Aussie red (the Bugalugs Shiraz works nicely) with the meatball sandwich, or try something a little more delicate like the Devils Rock Pinot with some cheese and cured meats.
