ZanziBar

Sometimes you can turn an average drinking session into something special just by adding a flight of stairs. The rooftop Cloud 9 bar at Zanzibar may require a bit of a climb but trust us, it’s worth it. It's decked out with wrought-iron furniture, spiky potted plants and terracotta tiles; squint, and you could almost be drinking in Marrakech. There are only two taps at the upper bar, one cider and one beer (there are more on offer downstairs) as well as a familiar range of imported bottled beers and a short cocktail list that favours white spirits and sweet mixers. A Thai iced tea or a Corona are excellent accompaniments to a healthy dose of vitamin D. If you get a little peckish, the tapas menu has some tasty snacks – mini arancini balls are a good choice – or there are more substantial meals if you are ravenous. The Zanzibar is not the flashest Newtown watering hole, but in a city where rooftop drinking is still a bit of a novelty, it's a really lovely spot to camp out for an afternoon.
