Step right up, ladies and gentleman because the Basement is about to be transformed into a Magic Club. Similar to a comedy club, only with magicians instead of comics, the bi-monthly night will feature performances by headliners including Australia's best ventriloquist Darren Carr and Phoenix from Australia's Got Talent, as well as amateur magicians showing off their wares in a bid for the $1000 grand prize. "There are two elements – the competitive element for up-and-coming magicians and performances by reknowned professional magicians," Ian Phipps says. "We're trying to build up momentum about magic and broaden the profile of magicians. But it's also for anyone looking for a unique night out."
The Magic Club isn't going to happen in a puff of smoke though. The venture was conjured up by two local magicians, PiP Comic Illusionist and Bizarrist Terence Brabazon, who were dissatisfied with the lack of venues in Sydney with organised magic events. "PiP's 23 years old and has been working as a professional magician since he was 17. His parents gave him a magic kit when he was 4 and he has been fascinated by it ever since. Terry is in his 30s. He's been working as a magician for over a decade in between other jobs," Ian says. "The two of them sat around one day thinking about how great it would be to have a dedicated place where magicians could go and perform. Being a magician is not like being a musician or singer where you can practice at home by yourself. You really need an audience for magic to happen."
The Magic Club magically appears every first and third Sunday of the month at The Basement.
