Review: Where most men fear to tread, England's Ross Noble leads a stampede. With his latest string of Sydney shows, the veteran stand-up comedian proves there are few places he won't go, from the logistics of self-urination to the difficulties of vampire intercourse in coffins. Every big name in the business comes under attack: Jesus Christ features as a self-healing, STD-riddled sex maniac, Sam Worthington as a misogynistic, foul-mouthed bogan, and all the while the randy ghost of Patrick Swayze floats around in the ether.
While Noble is not so much known for high-brow comedy, he more than makes up for it with his penchant for the rude and absurd, astute theatrical imitations – his Avatar and Twilight renditions sit among the highlights – and his unparalleled skill for totally off-the-cuff, spontaneous comedy. With random transitions, plenty of crowd heckling, and little-to-no evidence of a pre-fixed structure, Noble allows ample room for the unexpected, with hilarious results.
Although Noble does have a tendency to stretch a joke a little past its expiry date (audience punctuality, or lack thereof, being one of them), the crowd lapped up every joke, every time, proving that Noble remains at the top of his game. Millie Churcher
