Time Out Sydney Comedy award-winners Cloud Girls tell Andrew P Street all about their new monthly comedy showcase, HaHa.
What inspired you to run your own night?
We really wanted a space to perform experimental
comedy that isn't necessarily traditional stand-up and have comics that we
really like come and play around too. We wanted the room to have a variety of
comedy and freedom. And it be really really really funny.
Why the Roxbury?
The first fundraiser and second gig we ever did was at
the Roxbury in 2007. It was for our show How to Be a Cloud and Other Life Lessons, which we were taking to the Adelaide Fringe Festival. The room has
always had a really nice vibe. The stage is close to the audience so you can
get involved. The managers and extremely good looking bar staff have always
been great to us too. It's a good location (a plus). They have a 'Buck
Hunter' (a plus plus). You can also get real tasty food there which is always a
drawcard for us (a plus plus burp).
What's your criteria for artists?
People who make us laugh. They are maybe a little
different, very creative, original and doing what they do really well.
What, in your wildest fantasies, are you hoping to
achieve from HaHa?
To have (sexy) obsessive fans camping outside the
Roxbury waiting to bust on in and to get a good seat and buy our T-shirts (they
don't exist yet). Then to have Julia Gillard and Robin Williams in the audience
laughing hysterically (it wouldn't be a distraction). Diamonds would magically
pour from the ceiling when the show started. We have a crew of disgruntled but
mostly non-heckling flamingos in the front row.
OK... and who's on?
We've got Sam Bowring, Eric Hutton, Ryan Withers, Amanda Grey, Rhys
Nicholson, John Cruckshank and us!
