Decisions, decisions. Werewolf or vampire? Hunk or dreamboat? As the Twilight series drags into a third installment, Bella's (Kristen Stewart's) dilemma intensifies. On the one hand there's the devoted vamp Edward (Robert Pattinson) who wants to put a ring on it but won't get down and dirty with her till after the ceremony. And on the other there's earthy werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner) - ripped of chest, warm of blood and ready for action. Whom does she choose? Does she follow her heart or her loins?
Stephenie Meyer's book series saves all the real developments for the final volume, Breaking Dawn. Like New Moon, Eclipse is all dry humping and prevarication while evil vampire Victoria (the criminally squandered Bryce Dallas Howard) continues her vendetta against Bella. This time she enlists a battalion of voracious ‘Newborns' - newly converted vampires with many times the strength and hunger of the older, civilised Cullens - led by Riley (Australia's Xavier Samuel). Edward and Jacob will have to work together to protect the hapless schoolgirl from this rampaging emo army.
Director David Slade (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night) does his best with the material and handles the action scenes with vigour, but we've all been here before. And while Bella still insists on being transformed into a vampire she should be more worried about what's happening to Edward: with his growing quiff and conspicuous celibacy, he's turning into Morrissey from the Smiths.
