The Ice Age hits for a fourth time

First published on . Updated on .

Ten years since the original, the Ice Age series is looking surprisingly limber. Scrat is still chasing his acorn with all the accident-prone obsessiveness of Wile E Coyote and Sid the Sloth (John Leguizamo) still makes an endearing imbecile. Together with Diego the smilodon (Denis Leary) and Manny the mammoth (Ray Romano), they’re swept out to sea in a violent geological incident, falling foul of a monkey pirate captain (Peter Dinklage) whose ship is a galleon-shaped iceberg. Joining them is Sid’s not-as-crazy-as-she-seems Granny (Wanda Sykes) – nice to see older female characters popping up more often in animated adventures – and Jennifer Lopez provides the voice of a sexy sabre-toothed distraction for Diego. There’s more than enough slapstick and chases to satisfy the red cordial brigade and the adventure is skittishly exciting without being off-kilter or upsetting. This is the low-temperature family romp that Happy Feet 2 should have been.
