Behind the lively culture, human rights issues plague Latin America. The fifth Sydney Latin American Film Festival aims to explore these issues with films and Q&A sessions that capture the grim reality of the region. These include Beauty of the Fight, a documentary about two communities being dismantled to make room for the new Panamanian wealthy; Child Miners, an insight into the hardships of blue-collar youth; and Backyard, a feature based on the hundreds of missing and murdered young women around Mexico.

It's not all doom and gloom, though. South America's funny side is on display in such films as Crossing, a humorous take on getting across the US border, and the hit Argentinian comedy about an unwaveringly ethical office worker, A Matter of Principles.

Of course, it wouldn't be a latino festival without some rhythm. The opening night party will have you tangoing across the Dendy Opera Quays forecourt at an afterparty at Havana Bar featuring Sydney's energetic Afro-Colombian band Watussi. And be sure to catch the close of the festival, with a screening of the political documentary Eyes Wide Open and one of the finest mariachi bands in Sydney.

The festival is organised by volunteers and all proceeds go towards a number of social justice, environmental conservation and community development projects across Latin America and Australia.

Screenings take place at Macquarie University, Casula Powerhouse, Mu-Meson Archives & Dendy Opera Quays. Emily Cheng
