Thirty years ago Richard Gere was the hottest rising star on the planet, Debra Winger was about to become America’s sweetheart, and Louis Gossett Jr won an Oscar– all because of a movie called An Officer and a Gentleman.
The story of a Navy Aviation Officer candidate (Gere), the woman he loves (Winger) and the hard-arse drill sergeant who helps him achieve his goals (Gossett Jr) is a rewarding movie that inspired the musical currently playing at the Lyric.
A huge hit on release in 1982, the movie also won an Oscar for the song ‘Up Where We Belong’.
Catch the film on the big screen in a 30th anniversary screening at Hoyts EQ on Monday June 4. Tickets are $20 including a soft drink, popcorn choc top and CD music sampler.
