IF Awards 2010 winners

First published on 15 Nov 2010. Updated on 11 Mar 2011.

Teen action movie Tomorrow, Where the War Began has defeated Animal Kingdom for the top prize in the 2010 Kodak Inside Film Awards.

In another major upset Tomorrow’s young star, Caitlin Stasey, beat the hotly tipped Jacki Weaver to win best actress in the awards, which were given out on Sunday night at the City Recital Hall, Angel Place.

Stuart Beattie’s film based on John Marsden’s popular book for young readers has been a major hit in Australia, approaching $15 million in box office receipts.

It scored Beattie the award for best screenplay, as well as best music for composers Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil.

Animal Kingdom did not go home empty handed. Star Ben Mendelsohn was named best actor while David Michôd won the award for best director.

Tomorrow’s triumph reflects the voting system for the IF Awards, which are voted on by the general public.

The film’s younger, net-savvy fanbase would not have been intimidated by the idea of going online to vote for their favourite film as much as fans of, say, best film nominee Mao’s Last Dancer, whose demographic skews older.

Mao’s Last Dancer did pick up the box office achievement award for its takings of over $15 million.
