Sydney Mardi Gras 2013

Happy 35th to the region's most notable LGBTQI event

In its 35th year, Sydney’s big gay festival is bigger, gayer and more awesome than ever. From the big pride parade to Blanche, Dorothy, Rose and Sophia – as puppets! – here are our picks of the best of Mardi Gras festival:

Mardi Gras Parade 2013

Sydney

Thirty-five years after the first parade, the centrepiece of the Mardi Gras festival is still the biggest event of its kind in the world. About 10,000 glittered-up folk are expected to stomp their fierce selves from Hyde Park to Moore Park and Time Out’s expectations are high after 12 months of float-inspiring pop culture phenoms (we’re hoping for a flock of Tit Romneys and a busty Khaleesi with her ripped-as-f**k Dothraki hoard).

Mardi Gras Film Festival 2013

Sydney

Celebrating 20 years of the awesomeness that is Queer Screen in Sydney, the film fest is pulling it out big time this year. We’re frothing for 2012 critical dah-ling, Gayby, about a couple of besties – she’s straight, he’s gay – who decide to make a baby, and for the retrospective screening of Head On. Also at the top our list: black-and-white doco Joshua Tree 1951: A Portrait of James Dean.
