He may have had just two hits in the mid-80s, but in 1984, at a Sydney gay bar, Marilyn earned his biggest hit yet. Legend has it it was Mazza’s world renowned attitude for being more than a little bitchy that earned her a black eye from a fellow gay patron of Oxford Street’s then-infamous gay haunt, The Exchange Hotel.
The incident made world headlines at the time; however the exact nature of the conversation that led to the dotting of the eyeball remains a Sydney mystery. Marilyn left Australia, never to return, calling Aussies “animals” as he flew back to the UK.
The next 23 years would see Marilyn charged with possession of heroin, a failed second album and random appearances on ‘where are they now’ type TV specials.
