Gay-friendly Sydney gyms

Looking for a great gay-friendly gym? Or just an excellent perve? Well, here's five workout spots that satisfy

City Gym

East Sydney

Now 30-years-old, City Gym still sets the benchmark for choice and facilities – they’ve got those personalised tellies you gym junkies love so much! The original choice for gay gym hounds, the complex boasts three stories of apparatuses and a beefy menu of classes from boxing to Zumba. Here, hook-ups are a regime unto themselves – or, er, so we've heard – so you will want to train your eye on the floor and the sauna. The various membership packages work out at around $50 a fortnight.

Elixr

Sydney

Join this place if you want to brag about belonging to a chic health club, and how your divine trainer Juan is just the bees’ knees. More holistic in approach than the average gym – with remedial therapies and nutritional advice in the mix – the aim is to tone your body and mind. It’s not exclusively gay in any way, but you certainly won’t be alone, and with less competition around, a half-empty change-room can be a fantastic place to flirt. Fees are negotiated by appointment.

Fitness First

Around Sydney

If you boycott Woolies and you get around in a ‘McDeath’ tee, you probably shouldn’t hurry to join Fitness First. But if you’re not one to baulk at corporate culture, the shiny, shiny FF gyms might be just what you’re looking for. The well-located Oxford Street, Kings Cross and CBD branches attract an ever-increasing number of gay patrons. And the shower rooms can be eye-candy. Just be careful about signing up to a binding membership if you’re not completely sure.

Gold's Gym

Surry Hills

Previously Bayswater Fitness, Gold's is now a member of an international franchise which, spread across three floors, constitutes a worthy alternative to City Gym. Started in Venice Beach in the '60s, Gold's still upholds the American tradition of uber-fitness with resistance training, state-of-the-art cardio machines and much more. If you’re keen to nab a gorgeous personal trainer who’ll really boot in, look no further. You’ll pay a bit under $50 a fortnight.

Newtown Gym

Newtown

A cheaper alternative to the big gyms, Newtown Gym has all the basic facilities you really need. They may not be the shiniest in town but the cardio and cycle equipment should still do the trick for your flab. Chase your workout with a nice pilates class and you’ll be a step closer to stud-dom. For a super G&L-friendly gym – with sauna! - at around $60 per month, it’s definitely worth a look-in. Take the party next door to the Bank after you've showered.
