While that cute little puppy in the pet shop window may melt your heart, if you knew where it came from it would break it. Many pet store puppies are acquired from puppy mills - inhumane backyard factories where dogs live their lives in cages only to produce litter upon litter of pups. These pups are taken away from their mothers prematurely and sold in pet stores – over-priced, undernourished, under-weaned and often with behavioural issues.

The only ethical way to find your companion animal is from a registered breeder, or better still from one of Sydney's many animal shelters. With the help of the Mother Teresa of Aussie mutts, Monika Biernacki from Doggie Rescue, Time Out's Gay & Lesbian pages will be presenting a number of beautiful orphaned dogs who are just looking for the perfect gay family.

You need to make sure your immediate environment and lifestyle are a good match for your new best friend. If none of these dogs is a great fit, don't fret, pet – you can always log onto Doggie Rescue to find your perfect pooch partner.

Chicken Little(Pictured above right)
Female, two years old, mini Foxy cross
Though Chicken Little's size may be small, her love is anything but. Desexed, C5 vaccinated and microchipped, she's is the perfect accessory for any respectable dog lover.

Malcolm(left)
Male, four years old, Chihuahua x Italian Greyhound
With his spunkiness, Malcolm has the energy of a dog half his age. He's always ready for a cuddle, and when you meet him we're sure you'll oblige.

Kanga(right)
Male, five months, Foxy cross
Like a little roo himself, Kanga will hop into your heart with a single bound, and warm you from head to toe with his personality and boundless love.

Spartacus(pictured top)
Male, five months old, Staffy x Kelpie
His dark coat is the opposite of his light-hearted nature, and with enough love and care this adorable puppy will grow to be the brave leader he was born to be.
