While the genre of the gay romantic comedy is fairly new, we have been subjected to a few real stinkers. What is the secret behind the Eating Out trilogy’s success?
The writing and directing. You can't produce a good comedy without those elements and a lot of filmmakers haven't figured that out. I'm a stand-up comic and it's a lot more difficult to write truly funny material then people realise. That and my brilliant performance, of course.
The premise of the story, faking one's online dating profile, is not exclusive to the gay online dating scene. Have you ever been stung?
No! I wish I had a great embarrassing story to share though. I've been with my boyfriend Dante for years so I don't have a lot of personal experience, however I hear horror stories from friends all the time.
You play a reluctant fag hag. Are you good to your gays in real life?
I think I'm a much better fag hag in real life. Tiffani is hilarious, but she's kind of a dick to all her boys. If I really talked to my gays like that they would probably go tell me to fuck off. But Tiffani and I are very similar in the fact we surround ourselves with gays all the time.
We’re used to seeing straight men in gay roles, but how many of the cast were bonafied homos?
All of them. It was fags galore with all these young, openly gay actors. Hopefully they'll set an example for the rest of Hollywood.
While it’s a comedy, you are in the thick of some pretty raunchy scenes. What’s it like to simulate masturbation in front of a camera crew?
It has to be the least sexual thing in the world. You're surrounded by 20 crew guys that just want you to get it right so everyone can move on to the next shot. It's really not a big deal. At the premiere, Leslie Jordan asked my mother what it was like watching me masturbate on the big screen. She flatly replied, "Lovely."
The film has done brilliantly at the Outfest Film Festival and also at Philadelphia QFest. Have you been in the audience to see how it has been received?
Yes! it's the greatest thing in the world hearing the audience laugh! I'm always so nervous before going into a screening, because if they don't laugh, I didn't do my job. I can't relax at all while I'm watching. So far all the screenings have gone very well.
What was it like working with underground film icon Mink Stole?
Amazing! She was so nice on set, and so fun, and had so many awesome stories. I adore her. We didn't really have any lines together again for this movie, so the director (Glenn Gaylord) gave us this little ‘exchange’ together toward the end of the movie. He knew it would mean the world to me. And it did.
Has your role as Tiffani turned you into a gay icon yet?
It better. I totally want to be the next huge gay icon, so let's make that happen Australia.
Is Tiffani on a slut-hiatus or can we expect to see her back any time soon?
Tiffani is on a slut-hiatus but Rebekah Kochan is all over the fucking place!Follow me on twitter to see where and when I'm performing next. (twitter.com/RebekahKochan) Hopefully down under soon!
