Gay surfer girls unite

The popular online hub for gay surfers has created a dedicated branch for lesbian surfer grrrrls

Out-and-proud female world longboard surfing champion Cori Schumacher has been carving up the waves as well as stereotypes for some time now.

The 33-year-old California-based surfer is an advocate for gay and women’s rights in surfing and even knocked back a sponsorship deal with surfing brand Roxy because of the way the company depicts women in their advertising.

While the American champion has become a worldwide role model for both gay and straight women involved in the sport, Australia's local lesbian surfer culture is about to get the attention it deserves with a dedicated online hub at gaysurfers.

Gaysurfers.net webmaster Thomas launched the site after being frustrated while trying to locate an online site where gay surfers could become part of a network. Within the first six months of its launch the site has already signed up 2,150 members from over 76 countries. The daily membership growth reflects the relevance of the underground queer surfing culture that has remained relatively closeted to date.

While most current members are men, Thomas has created a dedicated arm to the site just for gay women who wish to connect with others who feel as passionately about the sport.

If the success of the site to date is anything to go by, it won't be long before Aussie-based gay girl surfers are connecting with their lesbian counterparts around the world.
