Moore Park Golf

Make an early-morning date with a bucket of golf balls at venerable Moore Park Golf and work up an appetite. Cnr Anzac Pde & Cleveland St, Moore Park 2021. (02 9663 1064).

The Eathouse Diner

You've spent the morning swinging a club like Arnold Palmer: now how about an actual Arnold Palmer - the classic American drink of half-iced tea, half-lemonade? A pleasant walk from Moore Park, the Eathouse Diner is a 50s-inspired addition to the increasingly civilised Redfern that's surprisingly saucy. You could be in a tattoo parlour; you could be in a bordello. In fact, you shouldn't be surprised to see the attractive waitstaff speeding by on rollerskates. The Redfern gentry and their offspring are packing it out, clamouring for space in the violently turquoise room. Find a spot at the long, red Formica bar beneath the overhanging tilted mirror - you can see what everyone else is eating (or look down their tops). Eathouse is more of a scene than an eating destination. That said, there's plenty on the ever-changing menu to like, such as oyster shots with chilli salsa and carrot, 'slaw with torn buffalo mozzarella. We're also keen to go back during the day to try the coffee and the pulled pork sanga. We're hearing good things about their Philly cheesesteak, too. There's a vego chilli (sans carne) on the menu, which is basically a bowl of bean mix with a separate bowl of sour cream and a big pile of corn chips with lime halves. Consider the good old-fashioned banana split complete with a cocktail umbrella, or the dulce de leche and strawberry sundae with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, fresh strawberries and a wafer, all topped with shavings of toasted coconut. Beers include Time Out fave Whale Ale, and if you're having an Arnold Palmer, watch out - the Eathouse Diner guys spike theirs with rum. 306 Chalmers St, Redfern 2016. (02 8084 9479).
