Seven-year-old critic Bill Blake (and his little brother) is enchanted by an Opera House show about the positive power of colour
When I walked into the Utzon Room, everything was white. The floor was white, the ceiling was white, the stage was white, the benches were white. It was like being in a world that was all white. It didn’t make me feel anything, probably because I was thinking about Lego. Lego is all colours. My world is full of Lego. My world is plastic.
On the stage, there were lots of birdhouses – or egg houses. A man called Cotton was knitting a white egg hat, like a beanie with a pom pom on top. Another man called Wrinkle is a mean a guy. He doesn’t like colour. He puts all colour in the bin. “Put it in the bin,” he says. Their work is going around making sure everything is white, saying “white, white, white, white, white.”
They catch eggs in their aprons. They fall from the sky, somehow. They seem to just appear in their aprons. They put the eggs into egg cups. Then they listened to the sounds inside the eggs. It sounded like children laughing. They kiss the eggs, clap and say "Welcome". They love eggs.
One day, they catch a red egg, which is bad. Or at least Wrinkle thinks it’s bad. Cotton thinks it’s amazing. Wrinkle tells him to put it in the bin. Cotton puts the red egg in the bin. Some of the kids got upset because they thought it was mean. But I can’t say how I felt because it’s too complicated.
At night, the eggs come alive in a way. They all start glowing in different colours.
Cotton and Wrinkle freak out. Then they tell each other that they both secretly like colours. Wrinkle says “I love orange. I love purple.” Cotton says, “I love red.” He loved that red egg.
I really liked this show. I liked the set design and the costumes. I liked the way the eggs just appeared, that was really weird. It made me feel really happy.
I think little kids and adults would like this show. People who like bright colours and happiness, would love this show. That’s just about everybody. Personally, I like craziness. This show is not crazy. But it is good.
PS. My little brother, who is 5, gives it 1000/1000, he loved the magical bits.

I like red eggs because they're more likely to be chocolate inside than white ones.
