He's nine. He's from West Pennant Hills. And he is better dressed than just about anyone to have worked in the Time Out Sydney office before. Seriously, those mustard slacks were outrageously cool.
He's Amardeep Gill, our new (temporary) editor, and he's calling the shots for our special Kids' issue of Time Out Sydney. It's out Wednesday June 26 and overflowing with great ideas for what you should be doing with your kids in Sydney.
Amardeep was chosen above dozens of entries, and the competition was stiff – five other finalists were so talented we roped them in as 'contributing editors'. "I'm honoured to have been chosen to edit this issue of Time Out Sydney for all the kids out there – and their parents – who want to have a good time in Sydney. Sydney is a great place to grow up. There's just so much to do."
Amardeep's favourite thing to do is to go bushwalking near his home. "I like to follow the nature trails in Cumberland Forest, Bidjigal Reserve and Lake Parramatta with my family." He's also a big fan of the Maritime Museum. "I can't wait to see special exhibitions Rescue and East of India," he says, looking forward to the next school holidays, "as well as my usual hangouts, the submarine and the lighthouse." And – a pre-requisite for any Time Out editor – he's a foodie who loves Japanese food like sushi and katsu chicken. Check out his reviews of great Sydney kids' menus in the July issue.
Though he's an ideas man who'd love to be an editor when he's older, his hero isn't anyone in the world of journalism – it's comedian, writer and TV presenter Anh Do. "He has suffered pirate attacks, starvation etc whilst escaping from Vietnam," says Amardeep. "But has made a good life in Australia... and he's a very funny comedian and author."
As well as editing Time Out Sydney
, Amardeep picks up a stack of prizes, including:
- A Merlin Family Annual Pass: 12 months unlimited entry to eleven top Australian and New Zealand attractions including SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo, Madame Tussauds and Sydney Tower Eye.
- Family pass to see The Addams Family musical with a backstage tour and meet and greet and photo op with the cast.
- Goodies from the Sydney Story Factory's Martian Embassy: The Martian Anthology (featuring stories from the kids at the Story Factory and by Nick Earles, Malcolm Knox and Debra Adelaide); Invasion Sunscreen and a 'Take Me to Your Leader' T-shirt.
- Family pass to Wannabes Family Play Town, a new indoor play centre in Frenchs Forest where kids can dress up as what they want to be when they're older – fire fighter, cop, doctor... – and have an adventure.
Be sure to pick up the Amardeep Gill-edited edition of Time Out Sydney on Wednesday June 26.
