The key cogs in this footy revolution are the smallest – the school kids adopting AFL through the NAB AFL Auskick weekly coaching programme for under-9s. Last year 163,859 kids booted Sherrins under the Auskick banner, assisted by over 20,000 adult volunteers.
Four Fs underpin Auskick: Footy. Fun. Friends. Family values. “Everyone – boys, girls and parents – learns the skills of the best game in the world while being physically active and making new friends,” says Auskick’s 2010 ambassador, the mega-moustachioed Hawthorn Hawks legend, Robert DiPierdomenico.
The the 2010 Auskick programme is set to be the biggest yet with the introduction of a girls’ school pathway at both primary (Paul Kelly Cup) and secondary school levels (Swans Cup).
With Team Greater Western Sydney firmly in the works for 2012, community spirit is at fever pitch and the
AFL is sending its biggest guns south, none more so than 2009 premiers the Geelong Cats who’ll conduct camps 10–12 Feb, followed by the Swans themselves touring western Sydney schools on February 16 scouting Sydney’s champs of tomorrow.
Sydney clubs are now taking registrations for the 2010 season and all boys and girls who sign on receive a fun footy pack with a synthetic footy, sports bag and cap, footy pump, drink bottle, CD-Rom and log book to record their progress.
