Sydney's best family cinemas

Our picks of where to catch a family flick

Wide-eyed: Imax Theatre
Feel like you're part of the action with this sensory swamping eight-storey screen. You can even kick things up a notch with the epic Imax 3D experience.

Cheap as chips: Randwick Ritz
One of Sydney's more wallet-friendly cinemas, the Ritz is tucked into a buzzing cluster of cheap and cheerful BYO restaurants. The beautiful art-deco building makes for pretty special flick watching, too.

Class act: Event Cinemas Gold Class
The name sounds posh but don't be deceived – creature comfort is the real aim of the game at Gold Class. The wide, cushy seats are dangerously relaxing, reclining so far back you won't want to move (and after one of their enormous chocolate sundaes, you mightn't be able to). There's even wait staff on hand to bring you the snacks you'll need, including plonk for parents. Gold Class cinemas are at George Street, Bondi Junction, Parramatta, Castle Hill Megaplex, Campbelltown and Macquarie Megaplex.

Easy rider: Blacktown Drive-in
Kids will love the old-school charm of Sydney’s only remaining drive-in. Plus who needs to fork out a fortune at the snack bar when you can fit a supermarket confectionary counter in your glove box? But the pluses don't stop there: your ticket gets you two films!

Vintage viewing: Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace
This cinema is a stunning step back in time. Built in 1935 by the top theatrical architect of the period, George Kenworthy, the cinema is glitzy indeed. It even has a genuine Wurlitzer cinema organ, which rises out of a stage pit on weekend evenings, complete with flashing lights and grinning organist.
