Time Out Sydney

Whip out the victory curls, the vintage and the vinyl – the Fifties Fair is back

When it started 19 years ago, the Fifties Fair was more a curiosity and less of the annual drawcard it has become for hundreds of hipsters, rockabilly-heads and ’50s enthusiasts. The die-hard crowd who spearheaded the revival in the ’80s still attend every year, but the fair has become a neat intersection of many of Sydney’s favourite things: dapper dressing, Danish design, retro décor, and records.

Expect stalls selling vintage and reproduction fashion, accessories, vinyl, furniture and objects, live music (including headliners Showdown from Sugartown and locals the Pat Capocchi Combo), dancing, and food by retro food truck The Nighthawk Diner (served from their restored 1959 International Harvester Scout) and Argentinian barbecue treats by Porteño.

Best of all – as you can see for yourself – it takes place in the time capsule of Rose Seidler House, a mid-century modern masterpiece designed by Harry Seidler in the late ’40s. To help you get appropriately gussied up, we’ve thrown together some of our go-to shops and stylists.

These guys have a good range of men's vintagewear from the ’20s onwards. The hat collection gets a special mention.

 Hot Couture

Based in Adelaide but selling through her online shop, Joy Taylor offers up both off the rack and bespoke reproduction ’50s skirts, dresses, tops and capris. If you’re after something bespoke, get organised at least a couple of weeks ahead.

Retrospec'd Clothing

Retrospec'd stock vintage reproductions of both women and men's clothes from slacks and shirts to party dresses and play shorts.

Round She Goes: Preloved Fashion Market

If you’re really cutting it close or having trouble finding something, your last port of call is this mega market of retro fashion taking place the day before the Fair. Better late than never!
