You may not be aware, but invertebrates are suffering an identity crisis – a problem the Australian Museum plans to change. “Invertebrates make up a staggering 99 per cent of all animals,” says Sophie Masters from the Australian Museum with a level of enthusiasm not often seen for our backbone-less friends. “They are crucial to ecosystems around the world!Despite this, they are often overlooked or seen as unpleasant.”
To counter the negative profile, the annual Up Close and Spineless photography exhibition was created to raise awareness of the importance and diversity of invertebrates. Open to amateur and professional photographers alike, the project attracted around 500 snaps from over 200 fans of invertebrates. “Many people have certainly photographed animals in their own backyards, but they are not restricted to this. Many have found invertebrates on their holidays or set up beautiful shots.”
Up Close and Spinelessis showing at the Australian Museum from Sat 18 Oct 08.
