Due to the MCA’s exciting
, the building will be closed from late June until November 2011. However, the Museum will continue to present MCA exhibitions off-site at the
, Darlinghurst and in
precinct.
The MCA is the only major public gallery in Sydney with a serious interest in contemporary art. It has fared well under the directorship of Elizabeth Ann Macgregor, a feisty and inspirational Scot who has spearheaded the museum’s renaissance. As well as the always interesting temporary shows, many from key overseas institutions and artists, the MCA has added a new gallery on level four to display its permanent collection. At the time of writing Macgregor had just booked the work of Danish-born artist Olafur Eliasson, whose mist show mimicking the Earth’s atmosphere wowed visitors at London’s Tate Modern a few years back. The MCA Café, facing Circular Quay, is worth a look.
