Review: All
the usual eyeliner-sporting suspects were out for the Placebo Myspace show and although the set was only six songs long that didn't stop the diehard fans
camping out from 6am. There were mattresses to cater to tired legs and Red Bull
cans littered Enmore Road from catering to tired minds.
Once the show kicked off any fatigue was
quickly forgotten. Frontman Brian Molko, was as androgynous and nasally as ever,
launching into the first single from Battle for the Sun, ‘For What it's Worth'. Despite being an early nineties bands
Placebo still has the teen fans, and they clung to his every word. The
intensity of ‘Because I Want You' and ‘Meds' cast an eerie silence over the
Enmore, and people seemed genuinely mesmerized by the bands sound. It's obvious
that Stefan Odsal and Molko have been playing together for sixteen years, and
new drummer Steve Forrest slotted right in. The band was tight, but I got the
feeling it wouldn't have mattered to anyone in the Enmore.
After five songs Placebo slunk off into the
darkness but chants of ‘one more song' were too much to ignore, so Molko and
Odsal reappeared, simply as a duo. We were quickly informed "this is how we
used to write songs in the nineties" before they launched into ‘Teenage Angst'
from their self-titled debut album.
For a band that was created before the age
of MySpace, Placebo knows how to rock a gig, be it secret or not. As they
wrapped up their set the crowd split into two: those who had a ticket to the
real gig later that night, and those that wished they did. Thomas Mitchell
