Hey, you fool, they love you: the Swedish hit machine return
1. ‘The Look’, 1989
This was the song that broke the Swedish duo in the US and, from there, the world. They’d released a few respectable hits in their homeland but things changed after an American exchange student took his copy of Look Sharp to an LA radio DJ. Take note, local bands: maybe you should start dropping off demos at youth hostels.

Saw Roxette last night - wanted to walk out during the first "half". Once we had all recovered from seeing how old Marie looked, we really couldn't ignore how her vocals have suffered, perhaps because of all the chemotherapy. Some of the songs sung early on were just ghastly 80s NOISE. The band and her ever-present female backup singer, were simply overpowering her. Her voice could no longer soar above them. Her male counterpart behaved and looked like a missing Wiggle, although his vocals were strong. The musicians in the band were pretty awesome, especially when given the chance to do solo breaks - lead guitar and keyboards WOW! Marie is so tiny, so fragile and pain is written all over her face. I felt very teary watching her. She certainly knows how to deliver a deeper song with much feeling. Luckily she seemed to gain in confidence and her voice did improve in the 2nd "half", so much so that we were all having a great time. What always drew me to Roxette in the old days was the incredible power, range and beauty of Marie's voice. Very sadly, the power is gone, the range is faltering, but the beauty is still there. The woman can certainly still sing but the Sydney Entertainment Centre is far too big a venue for her now. She simply cannot sustain projecting her voice. A more intimate venue would suit her delivery now - back away from the heavy metal backup and concentrate on a softer, more romantic style. All in all it was a very moving experience for a multiplicity of reasons.
