The MTV awards are no longer the Australian version of the US’s VMAs – which is what other regional MTVs do – the categories and formats of the parent station. Nope: MTV Australia reckons we’re special enough to warrant creating an Australia-specific program. The show offers even more innovation, in the form of the Fan vs. Band competition and the Remake Award. The former pits fans against their favorite bands, testing the knowledge of both on the respective band, game show-style. The Remake Award allows a viewer to win an award for simply re-enacting one of the key media moments of the past 12 months.
It’s no longer at Acer Arena – they’ve chosen the historic trainyards at Australian Technology Park in Eveleigh. Of course, one thing that hasn’t changed is the celebrity-filled nature of the event. Wyclef Jean hosts the show, which includes eight performances and eleven awards. Hot acts include 50 Cent, Eve, Juliette and the Licks, Kisschasy, The Potbelleez and many more.
Check out the event on Sat 26 April in person at Australian Technology Park, Eveleigh, online at www.mtv.com.au and, of course, on MTV via Foxtel.
