There's one thing that will stick in the memory of BDO attendees long after their recollections have faded of The Ting Tings setting the crowd in an early afternoon frenzy, Neil Young reeling out the classics to a rapt audience, or the near-riot when punters were turned away from the full-to-the-brim Boiler Room before The Prodigy took the stage. (Honestly, surely everyone's worked out by now that you need to be inside the Boiler Room at least a couple of artists early if you want to see the headliner?)
No, the definitive thing about Big Day Out 2009 was this: dear god, but it was hot. Estimates of the temperature ranged from 38 degrees to low 40s to I-don't-care-give-me-water-right-now-before-I-evaporate. This worked for some bands (Pendulum set the crowd into a heat-dazzled frenzy) and did less for others (standing on a lawn with the sun physically peeling levels from the top of one's head isn't the ideal way to experience the intricate late-night grooves of TV on the Radio). But as you can see, this year's event was another roaring success.
Kudos to the Crowd Care workers who roamed the grounds with water spray and sunscreen – but here's hoping next year's event is on a nice, mild, mid-20s sort of a day...
