Australia’s largest choral organisation recently launched their 2012 season – an engaging concert programme that includes beloved classics as well as incorporating new contemporary works, toe-tapping show-tunes and grand opera.

As always, the choirs will at Sydney Opera House and City Recital Hall Angel Place, as well as CarriageWorks.

Some highlights to expect in 2012:

Celebrate the Easter holiday with Bach’s St Matthew Passion at the Sydney Opera House in April.

Something Wonderful will happen in May as Sydney Philharmonia present a rollicking tribute to the musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein such as South Pacific, Oklahoma, The King and I and Sound of Music.

In August, Sydney Philharmonia follows with The Beatles Unplugged – Fab Four classics arranged by Sydney-based conductor/composers Sally Whitwell and Daniel Walker. Taking centre stage is one of Australia’s great crossover artists, iOTA, who recently won a Helpmann Award for his performance in Sydney Festival’s Smoke and Mirrors.

Of course, every aspiring singer will have a chance to perform when the ChorusOz choral education spectacular returns to the Sydney Opera House. Next year, the ‘one-weekend-choir’ will revel in the sexy, seductive world of grand opera with highlights from Bizet’s Carmen.

Throughout the year young singers and choral music fans should look out for performances by Sydney’s talented Gen-Y ensemble VOX. Under the musical direction of Elizabeth Scott, VOX will be performing with the Sydney Symphony, Sydney Festival and the contemporary music ensemble Halcyon.
