It has a storied history, this building. Kinsela's was a legendary live venue, and in more recent times the first level became thw superb Lo-Fi, one of our favourite Surry Hills bars. And one more flight of stairs takes you to the Standard, the venue which will host the Time Out Sydney Bar Awards 2012. Yes, we're pretty fond of the place.
Our love is justified, though. The Standard is that most wonderful of things: a live music venue. Not a pub with a stage stuck in whichever corner has the most power outlets. Not a club that can be repurposed for bands if needs be. It's been set up as a place to go see live bands: most of it is a large empty space, with the good-sized stage away from the entrance, the toilets and the bar so you're not being jostled when you're watching a group tear it up. The PA is tuned for the room. There's even a mezzanine, with bleacher seating alongside the stairs. There's something very old school about it, harkening back to the time when Sydney's entertainment was loud, lively and blaring through amplifiers. A harbinger of things to come? We certainly hope so.
And they break out the ping pong tables when the band finishes: now that, friends, is class.

I just phoned and asked what time the bands were playing last night... the girl was pretty helpful and told me to get there early. The door guy was probably over-friendly, but I thought everyone was really nice!

This may be a good venue but it doesn’t provide playing times for its gig. No other venue I know of is so dismissive and disrespectful of its patrons. I wont be going to any more gigs here.
