Six great places to stop in for a patriotic bikky

First published on 17 Apr 2012. Updated on 17 Apr 2012.

The durable bikky that kept our boys going in the trenches are a tasty treat all year round. But it’s every April that some of Sydney’s finest bakeries really put their attention into creating the perfect ANZAC biscuit. We spoke to some of our best cookie-makers – and if our conversations were anything to go by, cageyist – about what they’ll be offering.

Adriano Zumbo
The food-scientists at Zumbo will definitely be doing something on the day, but lips are still pretty tight as to what. Our guess (and wish)? Anzac Biscuit macaroons, and hopefully the return of the Australia Day lamingtons and Vegemite and eucalyptus macaroons! The Star, 80 Pyrmont St, Pyrmont 2009. 02 9810 7318. The Star and Balmain stores open Anzac Day; Manly and Rozelle stores closed.

Flour and Stone
Anzac biscuits are here all year round, but around this time, they’ll taste like patriotism. Flour and Stone’s traditional Anzac bikkies are made with two different types of coconut, making them chewy in middle and crunchy on the outside: the way our forefathers intended. 53 Riley St, Woolloomooloo 2011. 02 8068 8818. Open Anzac Day.

Sonoma
Anzac Biscuits don the shelves of Sonoma Bakeries all year round. Why? "Because they're yummy!" Thanks Sonoma, may every bakery follow your lead. 215a Glebe Point Rd, Glebe 2037. 02 9660 2116.
All Sonoma stores open Anzac Day.

Black Star
Not only will our favourite patisserie, Black Star, be pumping out the traditional tasties this week, but all Anzac bikkie proceeds will be donated to Legacy. Aussie legends.
277 Australia St, Newtown 2042. 02 9557 8656. www.blackstarpastry.com.au. Closed Anzac Day.

Kitchen by Mike
Mike rocked the Hot Cross Buns this Easter and will be giving the big bikkie the same treatment leading up to Anzac Day. Expect simple and delicious – like the rest of the Kitchen fare. We’re guessing these ones will be worth the line-up. 85 Dunning Ave, Rosebery 2018. 02 9045 0910. Closed Anzac Day.

Glick’s
When we called Glick’s, they said they were definitely making the biscuits but were cagey on details: still, if previous baked goods are anything to go by – try their rye and caraway bagels – this will be a formidable biscuit. 173 Bondi Rd, Bondi 2026. 02 9386 9949.Open Anzac Day.
