Surry Hills Brit-diner Bistrode is putting on occasional Sunday roasts ($50 for two courses). Book way ahead for this one, as they sell out mighty fast. 478 Bourke St, Surry Hills 2010. (02 9380 7333). 10, 24 Jul & 21 Aug.
Can't get into Bistrode? Dry those tears. Bistrode CBD (pictured above) ran a few roast nights during their March into Merivale campaign, which were so successful they decided to run them weekly throughout winter ($55pp including a flute of Chandon). Lvl 1, 52 King St, Sydney 2000. (02 9240 3000).
If you've got a bit of a party to feed, then head to the Local Taphouse for their Host a Roast nights. Book Wilfred's Room (upstairs from the main bar) and the Local crew will put on a roast dinner with all the trimmings ($30-$35). It's just like having your mum cook, but with better booze and fewer lectures. 122 Flinders St, Darlinghurst 2010. (02 9360 0088).
The Sunday menu at Bar Mattino looks more like something you'd see in an English pub than in a Chippendale café. The roast chicken is excellent ($24). You get half a bird (breast and leg) with a big pile of roast tatties, a little grilled stuffing cake, pumpkin mash, pickled cabbage and gravy. CBD favourite Fix St James have just begun roasting off whole suckling lambs and pigs on alternate weeks, and serving different roast bits on different days ($33-$34). 111 Elizabeth St, Sydney 2000. (02 9232 2767).
Rockpool Bar and Grill are doing a rotisserie chicken ($39) which chef Neil Perry claims to be better than the one at Zuni Café, the legendary San Franciscan roast-chicken providore to the stars. We haven't tried it yet, but that's too huge a claim for us to ignore for long. 66 Hunter St, Sydney 2000. (02 8078 1900).
Of course, there's always the multi-beast spit-roast at the picturesque Ormeggio at the Spit where chef Alessandro Pavoni, with a bit of notice (24 hours) will do a traditional Brescian-style spit roast for you and ten of your friends ($75pp). D'Albora Marina, The Spit, Mosman 2088. (02 9969 4088).
While we're on this side of the bridge, it would be remiss of us not to mention the beachside Sardinian restaurant Pilu at Freshwater where the suckling pig ($95 for two people), with its crisp rosemary scented crackling, is the stuff of legend. Moore Rd, Harbord 2096. (02 9938 3331).
Get a little Eastern European and head down to Prague for a roasted pork knuckle ($25.90) and match it with one of the many many beers on offer. 42 Kellett St, Potts Point 2011. (02 9368 0898).
