1 Malibu, Surry Hills
These sambos are as big as your head and cheap, too. Order the chicken schnitzel 'n' mayo. Yum. Try one of their tomato, cheese and avocado numbers on a rosetta roll for breakfast on the run.

2 Pilu Kiosk, 'On the Beach', Freshwater
This little offshoot of Pilu at Freshwater does a suckling pig panino - perfect with a hot chocolate overlooking Freshwater Beach.

3 Big Bite, Sydney
The lines are out the door every day from noon onwards so you can either get there early, do the queuing thang or get there later on and risk a smaller selection of fillings.

4 Hong Ha, Hurstville
It's all about the banh mi at this lil' Hurstville bakery. This classic Vietnamese sandwich, filled with pork luncheon meats, paté, mayo, coriander, pickled carrot, chilli, fish sauce, green onion and cucumber on a crunchy roll, is the ultimate Sydney snack.

5 Plan B by Bécasse, Sydney
Bécasse's little sister next door delivers big bang for very little buck including some first rate sambos. Try the coronation chicken or roast beef and horseradish.
