Bentley Restaurant and Bar, Surry Hills
At the end of last year Bentley was named by Time Out as Best Wine Bar. This year, they've surpassed themselves once more, and pick up the gong for Best Fixed Price Menu. Ten terrific courses for $50 may seem like a crazy dream, but it's a delicious reality. The menu changes all the time so you might find yourself starting with tuna tartare and avocado emulsion or smoked eel parfait with white soy and seaweed salad. Or you might not. Fingers crossed, though, for the calamari with rice cooked down all sticky with squid ink and served with a blob of green chilli sauce. You don't get a crazy amount of food on the plate, so although ten courses sounds like a gut buster, it's more an elegant sufficiency. Crisp slices of potato are folded over rounds of chorizo served with smooth harissa paste. And you can't go past the chickpea chips (the ultimate Atkins-friendly bar snack!) with garlic puree, stacked up like edible Jenga. Triple plus yay for the desserts - chocolate ganache with orange oil and sea salt, say, or ricotta dumplings, or malted milk marshmallows. The menu here is far from conservative and that's the way chef Brent Savage likes it. If you're willing to spend a little more dough, look to sommelier and co-owner Nick Hildebrandt - his wine list is as varied and interesting as Savage's food menu.
Assiette, Surry Hills
Warren Turnbull offers three lunch courses for $30 at this exciting fine diner. The menu changes constantly but you might see the likes of pan-fried John Dory with potato puree and crisp capers; a crunchy, spicy fresh salad of confit chicken; and a chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream for dessert.
Atelier, Glebe
Atelier, a sweet little cottage at the beginning of Glebe Point Road, is offering a midweek dinner special of $59 for three courses. Suh-weet!
Vini, Surry Hills
Chef Andrew Cibej barely holds back the hordes hankering after the all-Italian wine list and house-made pasta. Each Tuesday the folks at Vini offer four-course regional Italian dinners for $45.
Marque, Surry Hills
While the lunch menu is a little more modest than the a la carte or degustation menu, you still receive some of the most stunningly crafted dishes in town.
