Black Star Pastry
You can buy restaurant-quality pastries for less than a tenner here. Owned and run by Christopher Thé (former pastry chef at Woollahra fine diner Claude's), Black Star offers everything from bread to macarons to ginger ninjas (gingerbread men clad in choc ninja costumes).

Bourke St Bakery
The place to go for all your baked good needs. The lines snake down the street but with good reason - their ginger brulee tarts and sausage rolls are maddeningly good. Their new Marrickville digs have plenty of outdoor seating, too.

Brasserie Bread
Popular with tradies, mums and bloggers, BB don't just do bread - they also do pies, sausage rolls and pastries. Tony Papas, owner of the Boathouse on Blackwattle Bay, also owns Allpress Espresso, so while you get your sourdough, you can also bet on the coffee.

Central Baking Depot
Bourke Street Bakery's second cousin. Try the grandma cake - sultanas, crumbling bits of brown sugar and enough butter to kill Dom DeLuise - or our favourite (an oldie but a goody), the hazelnut and chocolate cake.

Iggy's
There are lines out the door for the bread and no wonder – Iggy's is fast becoming the go-to sourdough bakery for Sydney's top restaurants.

Luneburger
This place is busy, busy, busy but the pretzels still come warm and you can't go past their jam-filled donuts – so evil, yet so very delicious. We love their tiny ham sandwiches that go in three bites, too.

Luxe
Sourdough, rye and fig, soy and linseed loaves just about run out the door while staff from RPA hospital take a load off in the warehouse-style dining room that smells like fresh baked bread. The choc brownies are a must.

Sonoma
If you haven't tried Sonoma's organic sourdough bread, you're missing out on some of the best buns this side of San Francisco. Gotta love the soy and linseed bread (studded with whole soy beans, no less). Make sure to order a coffee if you're eating in the cafe. Buy Sonoma goods at their bakery cafés in Bondi, Glebe, Paddington and Waterloo.

St Honore
The best place to buy bread after 6pm (they're open until 8pm), St Honore boasts a sourdough cherry tart that's a lip smacker. Their love- heart shaped pastries made of layer upon layer of sugary, flaky pastry are enough to make you roll your eyes back in your head and drool like a Saint Bernard.

Victoire
Stupendous pastry, excellent pies and some of the best bread in the inner west. Their raisin bread is one of the only non-sourdough breads available, but the cinnamon-spiked dough is hard to beat.

Glick's
Best bagels in Sydney. Try the rye and caraway.

Infinity Sourdough
Open from 5.30 am until 10pm they do all sorts of interesting sourdough. Try the fruit and nut.

Foxwood Farm Bakery
The legendary roadside diner does prize-winning pies, both meat and fruit-based.
