Cheap Eats - Readers' Choice 2010

We asked you to nominate your favourite Sydney cheap eat and boy, did you ever: 2,551 of you voted, and here are the top ten

First published on 29 Apr 2010. Updated on 24 May 2011.

1. Guzman y Gomez
Mexican King St, Newtown

It may look like little more than a fast food joint, but it ain’t so. This is the most authentic Mexican food in the city. And you voted it Sydney’s best cheap eat by a landslide.

2. Mamak
Malaysian Goulburn St, Haymarket

This incredibly popular one-off roti house is one of the busiest restaurants in Chinatown for very good reason. It’s absolutely awesome.

3. Mad Mex
Mexican Crown St, Surry Hills

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Mad Mex with $5 Margaritas and food specials all through May!

4. Ayam Goreng 99
Indonesian Anzac Pde, Kensington

Quick, easy Indonesian goodness. Love the crisp skin chicken with heaps of chilli.

5. Chat Thai
Thai Campbell St, Haymarket

Chat Thai beats nearly every other Thai restaurant in Sydney hands down in terms of execution and flavour.

6. Chinese Noodle Restaurant
Chinese Market St, Haymarket

The northwestern handmade noodles are offset by the giant (and slightly weird) hunting tapestries all over the walls.

7. Happy Chef
Chinese
King St, Newtown

Cheap, tasty Asian goodness. You can eat here for a fiver.

8. Jasmins
Lebanese Haldon St, Lakemba

The felafels at Jasmins beat the hell out of all those dried-out balls of nothing you find so often in restaurants around town.

9. La Piadina
Italian Bondi

Thin, slightly scorche flat bread is made from dough that’s rolled out super-thin, spread on a hotplate then filled, folded and sliced. Bondi never looked so delicious.

10. Ramen Kan
Japanese Hay St, Haymarket

Ramen Kan have a huge range of noodles but the one to bet on is the miso ramen with the whole boiled egg and thin pork slices.
