Almustafa

Four lamb pastries with pine nuts and onion $14

The fare at this unassuming Glebe restaurant at the start of Glebe Point Road is exceptional. Sure, you could order the felafels with hummus and leave a happy camper, but give the lamb pastries with pine nuts a go. 23 Glebe Point Rd, Glebe 2037. (02 9660 9006).

Emma's on Liberty

Moorish chicken $17

As Lebanese as you'll find outside the Middle East and bang in the heartlands of the inner west. The Moorish chicken is a must.59 Liberty St, Enmore 2042. (02 9550 3458).

Erciyes

Pide $13

We're talking the original one here, in East Redfern. Legendary carrot and beetroot dips, and life-saving pides. 409 Cleveland St, East Redfern 2014. (02 9319 1309).

Jasmin's

Falafels with pickles and hummus, six for $3.50

The felafels at Jasmin's roll out crisp and golden and served with pita bread, colourful pickle salad and tahini dip. Do as locals do and make a hummus, falafel and hot chips wrap.30b Haldon St, Lakemba 2195. (02 9740 3589).

Safi

Lentil& rice pilaf $11

It's a little bit slicker than your average middle eastern suburban offering but the guts are still there, like moujaddarra: a lentil and rice pilaf topped with crisp fried onions. Yum. 55 Ridge St, North Sydney 2060. (02 9954 6146).
