The Earl of Sandwich may have invented this tasty lunchtime snack but Sydney has taken it to delicious heights
1 Little Devil on Broadway
This tiny Vietnamese hot bread shop has a delicious ace up its sleeve. The banh mi - aka Vietnamese pork roll – is excellent. Mayo, pâté, coriander, pickled carrot and various pork luncheon meats all come together in one crunchy white roll for your chewing pleasure.
2 David Jones Food Hall
Forget theoyster bar or the wok tossers: you need to head straight to the carvery and order the thick-cut, roast beef roll and extra gravy. There's relish and all sorts of other frills on offer but it's best to play it straight.
3 South
There's a whole menu of sandwiches at this southern USA-style eatery, but the pulled pork is the pony to bet on. Your regular ol' hamburger bun is filled with striations of slow-cooked pork served with a big pickle and a mountain of fries plus coleslaw and barbecue sauce.
4 Counter Burger
If you can't face building your own burger at this Crows Nest burger bar, give their BLT a try. Make sure to order an apple pie milkshake.
5 The Cook's Larder
The croques monsieur (French style ham and cheese toastie) and madame (same thing, topped with an egg) are reason enough to head to Avalon. Have a piece of their cake du jour for dessert.
6 Four Ate Five
Sweet Polish pickled cucumbers, thick slices of tomato, Dijon mustard and cos lettuce with onion relish is a sloppy, messy, fall-apart-in-your-hands-before-it-gets-to-your-mouth affair. Tuck your napkin into your top and put another onto your lap. This is a sandwich that takes commitment.
7 Big Bite
The lines are out the door every day from noon onwards so you can either get there early, do the queuing thang or get there later on and risk a smaller selection of fillings. Our fave is the roast vegetable (pumpkin, potato, eggplant, carrot, tomato and mayo) sambo on brown that's so large even the late great Pavarotti would have had a hard time finishing it.
8 Guillaume at Bennelong
You don't need to sit in the restaurant to eat chef Guillaume Brahimi's amazing crab sandwiches. These bite-size beauties of crab meat, mayo and coriander are available in the bar as part of the pre-theatre tapas menu.
9 Bang Bang
The fish finger sandwich is the opposite of your Birdseye/Tip Top childhood memories. Here, the deep fried fillets of fish are served on thick slices of white bread with aioli, all in a dainty basket.
10 El Mercado
At El Mercado, they'll do you a chorizo and egg roll on soft white bread. And when we say soft white bread, we actually do mean Tip Top – the middle might be a beautifully spiced, cured pork sausage but that bread is definitely not of a similar class (which is kind of cool in a way). They also offer a jamon roll.
