Partake in some hearty European eating in a comfy setting

First published on . Updated on 7 Mar 2012.

The Food Society is Sydney’s newest dining and catering establishment, officially opening its doors this week and offering a trip back in time to the 1950s. Step off the red carpet and into Grandma’s comfy lounge, awaiting the combination of modern Eastern European fare and a social foodie experience in Sydney’s inner city.

Co-owners Sonia Stanojevic and Brendan Lloyd aim to bring classic values into the Sydney dining scene. It’s not your typical dining experience: rustic, homely hospitality, a kitchen open late, and a carefully selected team in the kitchen and on the floor.

First up, diners can enjoy house-made pickles and crostini to whet the appetite. There’s no traditional cocktail list – instead, one can enjoy house-made lemonade or Peach Bitters with Kafir Lime and soda (served from an authentic 1950s fridge!). The Eastern European spirits are served in retro alchemist bottles and mini traditional Slivovitz glasses imported directly from Serbia. The wine list contains exclusive Champagnes such as Tsarine and over 30 of the finest vodkas, Slivovitz and beers. Many of the dishes are Russian inspired, such as the ocean trout blini cured in vodka with beetroots and dill cream. Feel like having something a bit more substantial? Try the beef short rib. Its braised in dark beer and served with a soft white polenta and buttered sprouts. For dessert go ahead and try the Pashka, a cheesecake made with Ricotta style cheese.

The unique concept of an experienced special event caterer opening their doors to the public and a commitment to quality food and quality service make them well worth checking out. Especially if you miss your Russian grandmother’s cooking. Bookings essential. Time Out promotion
