This place hasn't seen a lick of paint in decades, holes in the windows are boarded up with wood and the owner rarely turns on the lights, but the classic art deco flooring and old ice cream posters are charming. The cracked and rusty sign out the front reads 'Smokes Sweets', but the joint's main trade is milkshakes
Legend has it the owner made a promise to his late brother never to change the look or menu of the milk bar that they once ran together. We don't know if it's true because the old guy doesn't like to chat. Take a seat at one of the Formica tables, tuck into a bargain caramel shake, and make up your own mind about the Olympia.

I visited the Olympia in May while visiting from the UK. It is truly a time warp and should be preserved. Everything is pure 50/60's. Outside above the shop is advertised the Olympia hairdressing salon, so there may even be one of those preserved in aspic! Visiting there was one of the highlights of my visit to Sydney!
