Simple fare and good coffee are the aim of the game at this inner west café
Sitting at the crossroads of the inner west, as it does, the Wolf and Honeybee sees all types. There are shoppers headed for Marrickville Metro, jet-setters getting in a sneaky final espresso on their way to the airport and those achingly fashionable types on the hunt for vintage treasures on South King Street. Throw in a mess of students from Enmore TAFE and the Wolf and Honeybee operates at a steady hum, punching out shots of Campos coffee and simple, satisfying café fare.
By all means, fly by for a takeaway, but if you have time to linger then you won’t be disappointed. There are big open windows and simple white walls hung with an intriguing collection of framed political cartoons by Ward O’Neill. The menu is shockingly bacon free, consisting in the most part of sambos, croissants and various forms of toast, all of which leave you with change from a tenner.
In dire need of sustenance? Order the goats cheese and tomato on sourdough. They don’t skimp on the cheese and the little pot of olive oil to drizzle over the top is a nice touch. If you are after something milder order the poached chicken sandwich with avocado. For the health conscious the smashed boiled egg sandwich with tomato and rocket on a hearty seeded roll has it all. You’ve got your complex carbs, a whack of protein and some vitamins and minerals – your mother would be so proud.
There are friands and other cakelets, but for a real and rare treat order the cold coffee, made by dripping iced water over coffee grounds for up to nine hours.
