Fratelli Fresh – Waterloo

Waterloo

Frat Fresh (located in Waterloo, Sydney CBD, Walsh Bay and Potts Point) offers the likes of single varietal apple juices, tiny onions for pickling, beautiful heirloom tomatoes and individual watermelons the size of your fist. The Danks Street store is our fave, and they offer free weekly classes that make the most of the exquisite produce (Tue-Thu, 4-5pm). Now go forth and be vitamin-filled.

Fourth Village Providore

Mosman

This Mosman store features floor-to-ceiling shelves fit to bursting with preserves, condiments, spices and dry goods, and in the centre of the store is a veritable cornucopia of fresh produce, laid out in baskets, boxes, trays and barrels. And don't leave without a spin around the dedicated cheese room.

Victor Churchill

Woollahra

Vic and Anthony Puharich, owners of Vic's Premium Quality Meat, dress the windows of this butcher with the attention to detail of a high-end fashion boutique. It's a landmark for visiting chefs and not cheap, but you're paying as much for the friendly staff who will answer your every protein-related question as you are for quality and an unforgettable shopping experience.

Feather and Bone

Rozelle

Ever wanted to know the exact provenance of your dinner, and maybe even its name? You'll want to talk to Grant Hilliard, from Feather and Bone. Hillard also runs an online shopping service, which means you don't even need to get dressed to source your favourite cut.

Iggy's

Bronte

Treat yourself to a yeast injection at the local Bronte favourite. There are lines out the door for the bread and you just can't go past their sourdough.

Brasserie Bread

Banksmeadow

You'll find this bread in the best restaurants and provedores. It's beautifully simple, wholesome and tastes like sunshine. The bakery also offers classes in traditional artisan breadmaking processes for those looking to expand their cooking repertoire (three hours, $150).

Gelato Messina – Darlinghurst

Darlinghurst

Don't limit yourself to the usual suspects at this much-loved Darlinghurst late-night gelato spot. Instead choose from flavours like apple pie, yoghurt, cassata and blood orange. They sell by the scoop or you can buy by the tub, and the Laboratorio and Patisserie next door is now serving up the best looking single-serve, tizzied-up gelato desserts in town.

Pasticceria Papa

Haberfield

As well as its Italian-style sweets and biscotti, this glorious suburban pasticceria is home to a legendary ricotta cake – made to a closely guarded secret recipe – that causes queues stretching around the block at Christmas time.

Herbies

Rozelle

The herb aisle of your local supermarket just can't compare to Herbies. There are more spices available here than you can poke a cinnamon stick at. And in addition to both your exotic and garden variety flavours, Herbies does spectacular ready-made mixes for laksas, curries, tagines, barbecuing and all-round seasoning.

Essential Ingredient

Rozelle

Gold leaf and duck fat are just the beginning at Essential Ingredient. Alongside edible delights like couverture chocolate and foie gras, you'll find kitchen aids like moulds, pots, and high-end glassware to take your dinner party to the next level.
