Set in the Deep South in 1948, just prior to the civil rights upheaval in the United States, lives Daisy Wertham, a rich, crusty and sharp-tongued widow of 72.

Having recently demolished yet another car, she is informed by her businessman son, Boolie, from now on she must rely on the services of a chauffeur, Hoke. Immediately Miss Daisy regards Hoke with disdain and he, in turn, is not favourably impressed with his employer’s patronising tone or her latent prejudice.

In a series of absorbing, revealing scenes, spanning 25 years and filled with warm humour and glinting insights, the two, despite their mutual differences, grow ever closer and more dependent on each other, until, eventually, they become almost a couple.
