Fluid artistry at Spring Dance 2012
TAO Dance Theatre will be filling the Studio stage with sublime synchronism when Weight x3 / 2 makes its Australian premiere. The double bill defies categorization, its unique vocabulary set to the soundtrack of minimalist composer Steve Reich and a soundscape by Chinese folk-rock composer Xiao He. The hypnotic masters of minimalism have toured the world since 2008 to rave reviews and now they will now be bringing the double bill to Sydney for Spring Dance 2012.
Rafael: I had been a fan of Chinese visual arts for years; it’s been revolutionary at an international level. But I didn’t have a clue what contemporary dance from China would be like. If anything, I had the perception that it might not be very good. I was so wrong. Weight x3 / 2 is an example of when movement can say so much, and how it can communicate without the need of anything else.

I laughed, i cried, i wanted to crawl out of my skin and light my soul on fire. This was an auditory and visual assult of a kind i never imagined. Though technically proficient in every respect, the performance was interesting to say the least. At times the dancers were literally performing what i was feeling; writhing in seeming agony. The first pieces were quite interesting, very much reminding me of a philip glass piece come to life. The music was minimalist and looping in on itself until almost collapsing into one constant note. The second hal of the performance was another thing altogether. The movement were interesting and the pauses in the piece were bizzarre along with the soundscape accompaniying the piece which it what i imaging a blind electric guitarist would sound like fumbling to plug the cord into the guitar while the amplifyer was fully turned up. The audience seemed at times mezmerized and at times in pain. This is like nothing ive seen before so i would say go. Its good to know what awaits at the end of the mental tunnel that is complete madness.
