Josh McConville dons the flannel

In 2011, actor Josh McConville delighted audiences in comic roles in three Sydney Theatre Company productions: In the Next Room (or the Vibrator Play), Loot and Gross und Klein. This January, he rediscovers his darker side in The Boys with Griffin Theatre Company

Josh, tell us about your character in The Boys, Brett Sprague.
He’s the oldest of three brothers and has just been released from a short stint in prison. He has close similarities to a couple of the men involved in the Anita Cobby incident.

What’s your home and social life like compared to Brett’s?
More colourful and welcoming.

Brett builds a coffee table in jail. How are your carpentry skills?
I make a mean Lego castle.

Flannel: fashion ‘do’ or fashion ‘don’t’?
Do.

Thoughts on the film version of The Boys?
Haven’t watched it yet. Unsure if I will.

This will be your fourth show at the Stables. How do you feel about that space as an actor?
I love the intimacy. The audience really get invited in. You can play quite a lot more with vocal range, and physicality to some extent.

The theatre’s dressing rooms have been renovated. Any cherished memories of the old dressing rooms?
Haha! No comment.

Griffin’s also getting a café in 2012. What’s your idea of good rehearsal day tucker?
Sandwich and fresh juice usually does the trick. I would like an all-you-can-eat buffet though, for $7 – that’d be pretty amazing.

Memories of winning the 2009 Sydney Theatre Award for Best Newcomer?
Made an awkward acceptance speech and I bet you can guess how the rest of the night went…

What was your experience on the road with Bell Shakespeare for King Lear?
It was my first tour, so it was pretty exciting. Performed at some wonderful venues with very talented people. However, I was plagued with untimely injuries during that tour, and cost them quite a bit of money to fly an understudy around.

Pick up any tips for performing comedy from doing In the Next Room and Loot?
Have fun. Play. Don’t push.

Pre-show ritual?
Voice warm up. A cheeky cigarette has started to creep in.

Interval ritual?
Lemon and ginger tea with honey.

Post-show ritual?
Maybe have a beer.

Any on-stage stuff-ups?
Quite a few. But none match one stage report I heard about, when a possum made an uninvited grand entrance onto the stage and took a shit.

Wednesday matinee audiences: discuss.
I’m sure they’re all lovely people.
