OK, now things are getting really ridiculous. In the best possible
way.
The Venture Bros is a cartoon that rewards the avid
viewer, but by series three the labyrinthine connections between the extended
cast is almost in need of a flow chart. In fact, it's a testament to the way
that the series has grown that the actual Venture family are hardly in the
series, with Dr Venture's supervillain nemesis The Monarch and his new wife Dr
Girlfriend – now known as Dr Mrs The Monarch – taking centre stage. It actually
works, since the least entertaining part of The Venture Brothers has always
been The Venture Brothers, and anything that frees up more screentime for
characters like the Shaft-like Blackula hunter Jefferson Twilight (who gets the
series' single best line in: "I go where the blacktion is") or the mighty
Greek-hero-meets-semi-trailer supervillain Truckules is a good thing. There's
also a lot more development of the enmity between the US military department
Office of Secret Intelligence and the villain-coordinating Guild of Calamitous
Intent, which seems set to expand in the future.
It ends on a huge cliffhanger, and one wonders how much more backstory can be
revealed (I mean, once you establish the secret past of Billy Quizboy and his
missing hand, how much is left?), but this is another 13 episodes of pure comedy gold. Go team Venture!
